“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

Last year, around this time, I visited Big Island, Hawaii, for the first time. It reminded me of the beautiful, rich blue waters of Colombia’s San Andres Island, which has always set the standard for paradise in my mind. Growing up, San Andres was my ideal beach destination—bright blue water, white sand, and abundant flora and fauna. When I arrived at Big Island, it felt like a theme park, full of local farms and breathtaking landscapes. Every part of the island contributed to the stunning panorama that nature itself had created.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows the work of his hands.
Psalm 19:1
The colors of the sky and water blend together each day, hour by hour, minute by minute. Nature provides us with a fresh painting every moment, from the blue of the sky to the mirrored reflection on the water. It’s easy to see why this beauty feels like an untouched utopia. But we must also acknowledge the environmental challenges facing our planet. Nature, like a mature caregiver, can only handle so much before consequences follow. As much as we are nourished by it, nature is a force not to be reckoned with.

Growing up in Colombia taught me to appreciate nature’s many gifts—the colors, fragrances, and playfulness of it all. As an adult, I understand that nature is much more than it seems at first glance. It provides us with food, shelter, and mental peace, yet its importance is often overlooked.
As a child, I spent time at my family’s finca in the mountains of Pichinde or walked beneath the towering trees in my city, Cali. At the time, I couldn’t fully grasp how deeply these experiences shaped me into the joyful person I am today. Yes, Colombia, like many countries, has faced its struggles with violence and corruption, but our natural resources are a treasure that can’t be measured or fully appreciated until you experience them for yourself. It’s a paradise that has been engraved into my heart. Similarly, Hawaii and California have a natural beauty that echoes the memories of my childhood in Colombia.
But this beauty must be protected. We can’t take it for granted. This is just the beginning of the conversation…. There’s a balance to be maintained, Part 1/3 blogs…
