Linguistics: Maps

“Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.”

Benjamin Lee Whorf

A continuation from yesterday’s blog, how can one be fair? In order to play a game fairly one has to know the rules of the game, this applies to more than games, it is life itself. We may speak the same language but the meaning we give to words, actions, and life varies. We make sense of our world based on our upbringing and experiences. So what might be a joke to me, could be offensive to you. Different people, different lenses, different meanings. Therefore the emphasis in linguistics, and best stated by Michael Halliday “Linguistics involves analysing language form, language meaning, and language in context”

Through linguistics we exchange meaning, and this is where solutions with open communication reside. Also, where problems arise. However, if we understand the solutions we are seeking, we can express them, and ask the right questions in order to move forward unto common goals. We have to exchange what we mean, so it is time to change gears, yet in a mindful matter. After all, we have traffic signs and regulations for a reason. Once we know our destination we can hit the road, meaning we need to get a better grasp of ourselves. This will aid in respecting, understanding and sharing the common roads we already share, yet within our own individual lanes and personal journey.

Listening, communicating, and understanding are the basis to a healthy life and relationships. We possess our own answers, but without a clear understanding of who we are, we won’t decipher them. It’ll be like the blind leading the blind, which can become debilitating and translate into an empty life. So linguistics is the compass to navigate our lives, a Maps App, and there’s no need to get lost nowadays with the Apps we have available. The App in this context alludes to us understanding ourselves and those around us in order to communicate and navigate life. One can’t forget that roads have many different cars, yet we manage to drive, it takes lanes, traffic signs, but more importantly each of us knowing our own destination and enjoying the journey there.

Hi! I look forward to sharing topics and reading your thoughts :). I was born in Colombia, lived in TX for 12.5 years, and I now live in LA. Life has the tendency of throwing curveballs, and I've learned that preparation is of the essence. Preparation starts with knowing who we are, and what we want, the rest is history... I am a big admirer of art, artists, passion and creativity. Cheers to originality. I think all problems in life arise from communication. The solution is to become better listeners to ourselves, others, and hopefully be able to express and convey what we actually need… Art has the capacity of expressing what we can not at times. Art is not constricted to one thing... #thecircleoflife #letsgrowtogether
